Step back to 1745 as Jacobites and Redcoats descend on Braemar Castle for a thrilling weekend of living history, military displays and explosive battle reenactments. Alan Breck's Volunteer Regiment returns to the castle grounds to recreate the drama of the Jacobite Rising through authentic military camps, musket drills, living history demonstrations and spectacular skirmishes.
The action begins with morning inspections of the military encampments, followed by a precision Redcoat drill display before the first battle erupts at 1pm. Meet the Jacobite soldiers, hear their stories and discover what life was really like before tensions rise once again for the afternoon skirmish. The day concludes with a special display by the soldiers of 1745.
Scotland's turbulent past will be brought to life against the stunning backdrop of Braemar Castle in this fully immersive event which promises excitement, history and entertainment for all ages.
Built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar, Braemar Castle's connection to the Jacobite cause began during the 1715 Rising. Nearby, at the Braes of Mar, the Earl of Mar raised the Jacobite standard, declaring his support for the exiled Stuart monarchy, while the castle stood at the heart of this pivotal moment in Scottish history. Following the defeat of the Jacobites, the castle was occupied by government forces and converted into a Redcoat military garrison. During the 1745 Jacobite Rising, it once again found itself at the centre of the conflict as Jacobite and government forces moved through the area.
Braemar Castle will be open as usual throughout the weekend, giving visitors the opportunity to discover more about its 400-year history and its role during the Jacobite era. Visitors can also browse a range of heritage craft displays and stalls in the castle grounds, including demonstrations by the Crafty Guidwives of Speyside. The group of spinners, weavers and traditional crafters share a passion for history, exploring what life would have been like for ordinary women in the 18th century. Through traditional techniques, they demonstrate how woollen fibre was prepared, spun, woven and transformed into cloth.
